We belong to the Hamburg Oratorio Choir and regularly perform great works of choral music with the Hamburg Symphonic Orchestra in the Laeiszhalle Hamburg. We are about 50 female and male singers, divided into 8 voices. Every year we perform a big winter concert and a smaller concert in summer. On occasion we also give other concerts, as well.

We rehearse in Barmbek at the Stadtteilschule Helmuth Hübener,
Benzenbergweg 2, 22307 Hamburg,
every Monday from 7:15 pm to 9:15pm.

History: Out of the three choirs, the Hamburg Oratorio Choir Barmbek is the one most recently founded, dating back to 1914 when Heinz Hamm established it as the “Volkschor Barmbeck”. For the first years he too was, as the other choirs were, linked to the labour movement. Participating in the performance of Beethoven’s 9th Symphony in 1926 under Eugen Pabst was to be the beginning of a long tradition: Until today there have been about 100 performances, mostly given with the other two choirs. Hellmut Wormsbächer took over the lead in 1950 and Thekla Jonathal has been the head of the choir since 1998. In 1974 the choir was named “Hamburger Oratorienchor Barmbek” expressing that it was now to concentrate on great oratorio works.
